Who we are

Soul Business Ceramics was born during the Covid-19 Pandemic. Donna is a self-taught ceramist who fell in love with clay from the get-go during isolation. It was a skill to work on during lockdown and then a mindful practice to slow down, calm the mind and reduce anxiety.

Soul Business Ceramics beautifully reflects our commitment to mental health and wellbeing. Working with clay isn’t just creative expression — it’s a deeply mindful experience that gently engages the whole brain and body.

When you hand-build with clay, you naturally draw on multiple sensory pathways at once. Your hands feel texture, pressure, temperature and moisture. Your eyes observe shape, proportion and symmetry — noticing fine details while also stepping back to see the bigger picture. Even the subtle, earthy scent of clay plays a role. This rich sensory experience activates touch receptors, visual pathways and olfactory systems, encouraging the brain to integrate information in a calm and focused way.

Research supports what many ceramic artists intuitively feel. Studies in art therapy show that working with tactile materials like clay can significantly reduce cortisol (the body’s primary stress hormone) and lower anxiety levels. Engaging the hands in repetitive, rhythmic movement has been linked to activation of the parasympathetic nervous system — the body’s “rest and restore” state — helping to quiet the fight-or-flight response. In fact, neuroscientific research suggests that multisensory engagement enhances emotional regulation by strengthening connections between sensory processing areas and the prefrontal cortex, which supports focus, reflection and calm decision-making.

As you shape, mould and wedge the clay, your sensory system constantly provides information about resistance, thickness, moisture and balance. Paying attention to these cues gently anchors you in the present moment. This mindful awareness helps settle racing thoughts and creates space for clarity and stillness.

Sensory integration often feels automatic — we rarely think about how vision, touch and proprioception work together — yet without this seamless coordination, sculpting (or even simple movement) would be impossible. Clay invites us to slow down enough to notice these processes. In doing so, it offers more than an object at the end; it offers restoration, grounding and a quieting of the mind.

At its heart, Soul Business Ceramics isn’t just about making — it’s about reconnecting: to our body, our senses, our creativity and our wellbeing. It’s about living our values of authenticity, courage, compassion and connection.
